Constraining Fault Friction and Stability With Fluid?Injection Field Experiments

چکیده

While the notion that injecting fluids into subsurface can reactivate faults by reducing frictional resistance is well established, ensuing evolution of slip still poorly understood. What controls whether induced remains stable and confined to fluid-affected zone or accelerates a runaway earthquake? Are there observable indicators propensity earthquakes before they happen? Here, we investigate these questions modeling unique fluid-injection experiment on natural fault with laboratory-derived friction laws. We show range models diverging stability sustained injection reproduce measured during pressurization. Upon depressurization, however, most unstable scenario departs from observations, suggesting relatively stable. The could be further distinguished optimized depressurization tests spatially distributed monitoring. Our findings indicate avoiding near low-residual-friction depressurizing acceleration help prevent large-scale earthquakes.

Constraining fault constitutive behavior with slip heterogeneity

We explore features of rupture dynamics that (1) lead to slip heterogeneity in earthquake ruptures and (2) maintain conditions that permit slip heterogeneity in subsequent events. Our 3-D finite-element simulations of magnitude 7 events on a vertical, planar strike-slip fault show that the conditions that lead to slip heterogeneity remain in place after large events when the initial shear stres...

A Wideband Magnetoresistive Sensor for Monitoring Dynamic Fault Slip in Laboratory Fault Friction Experiments

A non-contact, wideband method of sensing dynamic fault slip in laboratory geophysical experiments employs an inexpensive magnetoresistive sensor, a small neodymium rare earth magnet, and user built application-specific wideband signal conditioning. The magnetoresistive sensor generates a voltage proportional to the changing angles of magnetic flux lines, generated by differential motion or rot...

Constraining fault constitutive behavior with slip and stress heterogeneity

[1] We study how enforcing self-consistency in the statistical properties of the preshear and postshear stress on a fault can be used to constrain fault constitutive behavior beyond that required to produce a desired spatial and temporal evolution of slip in a single event. We explore features of rupture dynamics that (1) lead to slip heterogeneity in earthquake ruptures and (2) maintain these ...

An empirically based steady state friction law and implications for fault stability

Empirically based rate-and-state friction laws (RSFLs) have been proposed to model the dependence of friction forces with slip and time. The relevance of the RSFL for earthquake mechanics is that few constitutive parameters define critical conditions for fault stability (i.e., critical stiffness and frictional fault behavior). However, the RSFLs were determined from experiments conducted at sub...

Automatic fault detection in Friction Stir Welding

Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a relatively new welding technique where metals are joined through mechanical stirring. Due to its numerous advantages over older welding methods, it has been implemented in an increasing number of industries. However, there are remaining challenges to be overcome in FSW. One of the most serious is its reliance on accurate weld parameters. Additionally, faults or ...
